Maths Vision
Here at Westminster CofE Primary Academy our vision is to educate our children to improve their life chances and future economic well-being. We believe that education is empowerment and that maths plays an important part, being a recurring and highly interconnected discipline in the world of work and throughout our daily lives.
Our school have adopted the mastery approach to the teaching and learning of maths, and our curriculum will aim to develop an enjoyment for maths and an understanding of its importance in society. By the time they leave us, pupils will become confident in their fluency and reasoning skills where they can explain why their answer is correct and how they worked it out. Pupils will secure the fundamental mathematical knowledge and key concepts required to deepen their understanding through small granular steps when developing their thinking strategies so that they can make rich connections, spot patterns in science and other subjects and apply their knowledge to new contexts. With the support of mathematical sentence stems the children are encouraged to explain their thinking to themselves and others, evaluate their thinking and learning using the appropriate mathematical language.
In Early Years the children will develop skills to identify the number of objects without counting each one individually. Subitising will help them understand what numbers mean or how many things a number refers to, assisting them with recognising patterns and to not become over reliant on counting. Throughout our pupil’s education, they are encouraged to use manipulatives and representations to support and increase engagement, so they make sense of mathematical concepts and develop visual images that provide them with a bridge to abstract thinking.
We believe that it is important for our children to have experienced a broad range of knowledge covered within the National Curriculum, but underpinning all of these will be the two most important strands of knowledge which are number and calculation. We believe that it is important to prepare our pupils for the work place so they should have a strong understanding of practical applications across different contexts.
