Supporting your child with early reading (Nursery – Year 2)
- Read every day – with them and to them
- Read different types of texts
- Listen and sing nursery rhymes
- Track (point to) each word the child is reading
- Use phonetic knowledge (letter sounds) to segment (split up) and blend (join sounds together) sounds for new vocabulary
- Discuss the meaning of new vocabulary
- Learn your year groups high frequency words – these are words that cannot be sounded out
- Ask questions to check their understanding
- Compare reading to their own experiences
- Model good reading
- Encourage enjoyment in reading
Supporting your child with reading (Year 3 - Year 6)
- Read everyday
- Read a wide range of texts – fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction, newspapers
- Read a wide range of authors – Roald Dahl, Julia Donaldson
- Discuss the meaning of new vocabulary
- Ask questions to check their understanding
- Compare reading to their own experiences
- Model good reading
- Encourage enjoyment in reading
